It’s just been barely a month since I stepped inside the hospital for my lumpectomy and I had to go back to see my OB-GYN for my annual pap smear. She greeted with a smile, happy to have heard that the mass taken out from my breast is benign.
During the consultation, she suggested that I get the HPV vaccine. Let me start by defining HPV. This is the Human Papillomavirus and can affect both sexes. There are no symptoms or signs so most people do not know they are infected with it. There are many types of this virus but some can cause cervical cancer and genital warts. Studies show most women get cervical cancer between the ages of 35-55 years old and these women are most likely exposed to cancer causing HPV during their early teens and 20s.
This vaccine comes in three shots spaced within 6 months. I must also say that it is not cheap, about P6,000 per shot. Luckily my timing was perfect because there was an on going promo so I paid a discounted rate.
This is also recommended for young ladies, in the early teens I believe. HPV can be passed on through genital contact even if there is no sexual intercourse. With sex being more rampant among this age group, this is one way to protect them.
In a nutshell, if budget permits it would be a good idea to get the vaccine. Shielding yourself from this virus would at least spare you from one kind of cancer.

heard about this also from a kumare... it is a little steep though... hope it will get cheaper so that i'll be able to get a shot...
if only they can lower the cost and make it more available to the public including the low income sector of our society, it will surely help lower the rate of cervical cancer.
find a medical representative that distributes the vaccine. you'll be surprised by how lower it is priced compared to what your OB/pharmacy is offering you.
